The Will-Burt Company: Elevating Industries and Communities for Over a Century in Wayne County, Ohio

    June 24, 2024

Since 1901, The Will-Burt Company has been a beacon of innovation and excellence, not just in Wayne County, Ohio, but worldwide. What started as a modest operation in Orrville has blossomed into a worldwide leader in mobile elevation solutions, with offices and manufacturing facilities in the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany and Singapore.

From Repair Shop to Global Leader: The Will-Burt Company's Legacy of Innovation and Excellence

The Will-Burt Company traces its roots back to 1894 when the Cope brothers opened a general repair shop, later partnering with William Tschantz. "Will" Tschantz and "Burt" Cope began business as The Will-Burt Company in 1916. Incorporated in 1918, Will-Burt began offering contract manufacturing services, which continue today with advanced metal fabrication and powder-coating capabilities. Over the years, the company has diversified its product line, including coal stokers, heaters and the versatile Versa-Vise, maintaining a legacy of quality and innovation.

In the 1970s, Will-Burt expanded into mobile elevation products by acquiring a company that made telescoping pneumatic masts for the U.S. Army, leading to global leadership in this field. Transitioning to a 100% employee-owned company in the 1980s, Will-Burt's commitment to its workforce and innovative spirit has driven its success and sustained its reputation for excellence across generations.

Operating as an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer, Will-Burt offers a wide range of telescoping masts, towers, trailers, pan and tilt positioners and scene lighting solutions for defense, government, first responders, telecommunications, energy production and other markets.

The Will-Burt Company has earned a reputation for excellence through its commitment to quality, strong engineering capabilities and a relentless drive for innovation. The company's products have been integral to several high-profile projects, including the Patriot Missile Defense Systems, Israeli Iron Dome Missile Defense System, Night Scan (the #1 selling light towers for use on U.S. fire trucks) and telescopic masts used on all First Net AT&T emergency communication systems.

Beyond Profit: How Employee Ownership Benefits The Will-Burt Company and Its Community

At The Will-Burt Company, employee ownership is not just a formality—it's the heart of its identity. With 100% of the company being employee-owned, Will-Burt fosters a culture of dedication and innovation. Every employee is more than just a worker but also a stakeholder in the company's success. This sense of ownership translates into a deep commitment to quality, customer satisfaction and continuous improvement. This ownership model sets Will-Burt apart and inspires its employees to do better every day.

Studies have shown that employee-owned companies are more profitable and experience faster growth than their non-employee-owned counterparts. These results are not surprising, given that employees who have a stake in the company's success are more motivated, engaged and committed to its long-term viability.

The benefits of employee ownership extend beyond the company itself to the broader community. By empowering its workforce, The Will-Burt Company creates jobs and nurtures a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation that benefits the entire region. Employees are ambassadors for the company, helping attract top talent and investment.

A Proud Legacy, A Bright Future

The Will-Burt Company aims to continue its growth trajectory while maintaining its high quality and customer service standards. The company is committed to creating safer environments globally, connecting people, protecting lives and creating essential infrastructure. The goal is to provide a stable working environment for its employee-owners, ensuring the company's legacy for future generations.

As a global leader with sales in over 120 countries, the company's impact extends beyond its products, reflecting a commitment to excellence, innovation and community. For The Will-Burt Company, elevating industries is not just a business—it's a legacy of excellence and innovation that has defined them for over a century.

The Will-Burt Company's journey from its humble beginnings in Orrville to its current status as a global leader is a testament to its commitment to excellence, innovation and community. As the company continues to grow and evolve, its impact on industries and communities worldwide will only continue to grow, ensuring a legacy that will endure for generations.
