Fueling Success: Stahl Truck Bodies Accelerating Growth in 2024
Stahl Truck Bodies, a Marmon Holdings/Berkshire Hathaway Company, has been producing service truck bodies since 1946. Not only are they producing service body trucks used for industries such as construction and utilities, but for the last 40-years, they’ve also produced larger chip truck bodies through their Arbortech division.
With distributors conveniently located throughout the United States and Canada, this truck body manufacturer produces durable truck bodies with a heavy-duty performance. Recently undergoing structural changes within their parent company, Stahl Truck Bodies is well positioned for growth.
Originally known as Stahl Truck Bodies, a Scott Fetzer Company, Stahl Truck Bodies was one of 13 companies of Scott Fetzer, who is owned by Berkshire Hathaway. Earlier this year, Scott Fetzer rolled into Marmon Holdings, another Berkshire Hathaway company, so now Stahl Truck Bodies is now under Marmon Holdings.
“We are now one of 25 transportation companies within Marmon Holdings,” said Mike Stuckey, president of Stahl Truck Bodies. “Everyone keeps their jobs within the restructure, and Marmon will help provide growth opportunities.”
Originally from Virginia, Stuckey has worked for three Scott Fetzer companies. “I really enjoy my job,” exclaimed Stuckey. “It took us a while to bounce back after the 2008 recession, but we’ve doubled our business in the last three-years, and we’re still growing.”
With 160 employees working three shifts a day, five-days a week, Stahl Truck Bodies reached their building capacity in 2017. “We underwent an expansion in 2021 for our Arbortech division,” said Stuckey. “We’re now adding a powder coat paint booth that will allow us to boost capacity for the service truck bodies.”
Not only does Stuckey enjoy his job, but he enjoys giving people jobs. “We’re becoming an employer of choice,” said Stuckey. Stahl Truck Bodies embodies four company values: openness, positivity, respect and grit. “We can’t fix problems we don’t know about, so we encourage employees to be open with their supervisors,” said Stuckey. “We also say respect is not earned, it’s given when employees walk in the door, promising a hassle-free work environment,” continued Stuckey. “And finally, along with a positive attitude, we value grit.
We’re all busy, so we encourage employees to find a way to get it done.”
Stahl Truck Bodies’ employees also enjoy benefits throughout the year, such as an annual pig roast, an annual Christmas dinner and Make the Month Lunches. “If we hit our financial targets each month, we treat everyone to lunch,” stated Stuckey. “If the company performs well, of course, we want to share it with our employees.”
Employees are also rewarded based on the four company values. “If we see an employee acting on our values, they’re rewarded with a Stahl Truck Bodies’ poker chip,” said Stuckey. “Each poker chip is worth five dollars in the ‘Stahl Store,’ where employees can purchase apparel and other promotional items.”
With a low turnover rate, Stahl Truck Bodies has seen a lot of longevity. “One employee has been here almost 43 years,” said Stuckey. “We have others with over 40 years, and now their families work here too.” While salaried employees average 12 years, there are a few current openings on second and third shifts for production workers and press brake operators. “We’ve also incorporated an employee referral system,” continued Stuckey. “Both the referring employee and the new referral each get $1,000 if that new referral stays for six-months.”
While employees enjoy many benefits, Stuckey is most proud of their employees’ generosity. “Employees serve on boards and support numerous fundraisers for organizations throughout town,” said Stuckey. “We’re one of the largest supporters of Toys for Tots.”
With the recent restructuring and a strong workforce, Stahl Truck Bodies is well positioned for growth. “With a current market share of 10%, I see a lot of growth with the service truck bodies,” said Stuckey. “I would like to see us add both flat and dump beds to our product offerings.”
