Montreal Company Chooses Wooster, Will Create 50 New Jobs

Speed North America, Inc. of Montreal, Canada will relocate its corporate headquarters and manufacturing operations from that country to a new location in Wooster.

Speed is a subsidiary of Speed France which was founded in 1978 in France and is currently headquartered in Rue de Chavanne near Lyon, FranceThe privately-owned company has 180 employees worldwide.

Speed France specializes in the conversion of polyamide and copolyamide materials into high quality monofilaments for a wide
variety of applications.  These filaments are used in garden and edge trimmers, fishing lines, packaging, cables and ropes.
It manufactures product sold under the Oregon, Husqvarna and Eco labels.

Speed North America Inc. will focus primarily on the growing market in North America of garden and edge trimmers. It is relocating its Canadian operation to Ohio  in order to be closer to its U.S.-based customers.

Speed's innovative approach to very high tech monofilament design, to which 15 patents are owned, has it positioned as a significant player in 40 countries on three continents. Their commitment to continuous improvement and investment in modern production lines, packaging machinery and quality monitoring devices is critical to maintaining this success.

The new Wooster facility clearly reflects such a commitment with a significant portion of the investment being directed toward highly automated equipment, much of which has been engineered by Speed France.

The company will relocate to the former Bosch Rexroth building that was recently acquired by D + S Distribution. It plans to occupy approximately 70,000 square feet of space and will invest more than $4.5 million in new equipment.

The company will create 50 new full-time jobs with an average wage of $13.50 per hour, plus $3.25 per hour in benefits. The company was assisted in its relocation with an incentive package offered by the State of Ohio and the City of Wooster.

WEDC Seeking Teacher Externship Participants

The WEDC is working with the Wayne Business Education Council to provide teachers an opportunity to work in local businesses so that they might better understand the workforce requirement needs of employers.

Since the program began, 20 teachers have participated with nine companies. The teachers work for three weeks in the summer and are required to meet all the requirements of a new hire including completing employment applications, interviews and drug screenings.  Participants are paid an hourly wage of approximately ten dollars during their experience.

The program provides teachers with first hand knowledge of how to connect classroom content to the workforce needs of business.  Providing teachers with this experience will help to create a better prepared workforce for employers throughout Wayne County.

If you are interested in participating, please contact the WEDC at 330-264-2411 or by email at info@waynedevelopment.org.

2007 Another Great Year!

According to preliminary data compiled by the WEDC, 2007 will go down as another banner year for Wayne County.  More than $143 million in new capital investments representing 33 projects were announced or completed this year, compared to $123 million (22 projects) announced or completed in 2006.  A full economic impact  analysis will be released in early 2008.

The information is compiled annually and submitted to Site Selection magazine. Last year, Wayne County was ranked second in the nation last year by the publication for the number and size of projects completed by businesses in 2006.

A good Site Selection ranking brings provides commuities with national exposure that generates interest among other companies looking to expand or relocate. Since the survey was started in 2000, Wayne County's average ranking is 28 among nearly 600 micropolitan areas. Only thirteen micros, including Wayne County, have been ranked in the top 100 in each of the years the study has been conducted.

To qualify, the project must involve 50 or more new or retained jobs; 20,000 square feet of newly built or occupied space or $1 million or more in investment.  The project status can be announced, completed, under construction, under review or pending. SIte Selections rankings for 2007 will be issued in February.

Foreign Multinational Shuns Wayne County; Decides to Stay Put

Arctic Circle-based multinational S.C. Ltd. (SCL) has ended its site search by deciding to keep its world headquarters parked at the North Pole, owing in part to logistics concerns. The decision quells a rumored strike among SCL's delivery workers.

The company had earlier this year shown an interest in Wayne County based on its reputation for a quality workforce and expertise in animal livestock.

SCL Founder and CEO Chris Kringle said that while Wayne County offered an ideal location for the enterprise, the company's associates were unyielding in their opposition to the possibility of relocation.  Kringle also said the move would negatively impact the company's branding efforts worldwide. (Source: Site Selection Magazine)
